WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Lakeland College men's soccer team peppered its opponent with shots, but Maranatha Baptist University was the far more opportunistic team in defeating the Muskies 3-2 Tuesday night in a non-conference match.
Lakeland outshot MBU 28-7 for the match, but the Sabercats scored three goals in their five shots on goal. The Muskies had 10 shots on goal but fell behind in the first half and a second half rally came up just short.
Mirko Tadic (
Sr.-Santiago, Chile) and
Charles Apostolik (
Fr.-New Castle, Colo.) scored the goals for Lakeland (2-10 overall). Tadic converted a penalty kick in the 67th minute to cut MBU's lead to 2-1, while Apostolik scored his first collegiate goal with 3:26 left in the match to close the Muskies back in within a goal again.
Maranatha Baptist (6-5-1 overall) took the lead in the first half when Jeremy Knudsen scored the first of his two goals just 14:55 into the match. The Sabercats scored again at 59:08 on a tally by Nathan Akers to make it 2-0, and MBU answered Lakeland's first goal with Knudsen's second at 76:59.
The Muskies had repeated chances throughout the match for further scores but could not convert. That included a pair of shots off the pipe in the second half, as Apostolik hit the crossbar just over a minute before Tadic's penalty kick, and
Dylan Lange (
Fr.-Geneva. Ill.) hit the post with a shot in the 71st minute.
Apostolik and
Dustin Garbe (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) both attempted six shots each, and eight Muskie players attempted at least two shots.
Thomis Mannebach (
So.-Florence, Wis.) made two saves as the goalkeeper for the Muskies. Charles Leeds made eight saves for Maranatha Baptist.
Lakeland plays the second of five consecutive road games when it travels to face Concordia University Chicago on Saturday. The game is part of a doubleheader that includes the two schools' women's teams playing first at 1 p.m., with the men's match to follow at 3:30 p.m.
