After spotting Lawrence University the first two sets, the Lakeland College women's volleyball team stormed back with authority, finally earning a five-set victory on Halloween night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies prevailed 22-25, 16-25, 25-13, 25-9, 15-13 in their regular season finale. Lakeland improved to 16-14 with the non-conference win, clinching a winning season and also adding to the Muskies' longest winning streak in seven years. The team has won seven consecutive matches, the longest in program history since an eight-match streak in the 2008 season.
Lakeland played its final non-conference match and its last match before it enters the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament next week. On an emotional night in which four seniors were honored before the match, the Muskies did not start well, losing a narrow first set and bottoming out with an ugly second set as the Vikings (8-19 overall) asserted control.
Lakeland did rally by dominating the third and fourth sets, including momentum from a 15-5 run to end the third set that carried over into a 14-3 lead to start the fourth set. That set the stage for a narrow fifth set which included eight ties, including the final one at 13-13 before
LeShay Jones (
Sr.-Pontiac, Mich.) delivered a kill and a Lawrence attack error ended the match.
Courtney Naser (
So.-Altoona, Wis.) carried the offense early and finished with a match-high 14 kills. Jones and
Kathy Flanagan (
Jr.-Midlothian, Ill.) both added 12 kills each as the Muskies hit .133 with 57 kills and 33 errors.
Caleigh Galvan (
Sr.-New Lenox, Ill.) posted 28 digs and
Allison Errthum (
So.-Joliet, Ill.) added a career-high 25 digs along with 10 kills.
Taylor Levitt (
Jr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) led the team with 44 assists.
Arianna Neumeyer led Lawrence with 11 kills and two service aces and also added 15 digs. The Vikings hit .000 for the match with 31 kills and 31 errors, including -.098 over the final three sets.
In addition to Galvan and Jones, seniors
Brooke Aiazzi (
Yerington, Nev.) and
Emily Thomas (
Stevens Point, Wis.) also were honored before the match. All four seniors were in the starting lineup in the first set.
Lakeland now gets ready for its NACC Tournament quarterfinal Tuesday against fifth-seeded Aurora (Ill.) University at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium. The Muskies are the No. 4 seed in the tourney and defeated the Spartans in four sets Oct. 23.
