The Lakeland College women's volleyball team found its stride after the first set and kept its season alive for another day with a four-set win over Aurora (Ill.) University Tuesday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinal at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The fourth-seeded Muskies rallied for a 20-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-18 victory over the No. 5 seed Spartans, advancing to the tourney semifinals for the second time in three years. Lakeland now prepares for a semifinal match at top-seeded Edgewood College Thursday night in Madison.
The Muskies (17-14 overall) won their eighth consecutive match, tying for the longest streak since the 2008 squad also won eight straight. Lakeland also swept the season series from Aurora and earned revenge for a five-set loss on the road to the Spartans in last year's NACC tourney quarterfinals 4-vs.-5 match, in which the Muskies led 2-0 before Aurora rallied to win the final three sets.
Lakeland got off to a slow start, hitting -.018 in the first set and adding three service errors. The Spartans (13-18 overall) were sharper at the start, but the Muskies slowly gained control, starting with a clean second set that featured 10 kills and just two attack errors.
Momentum turned firmly in the third set, when Lakeland battled back from a pair of five-point deficits. Aurora was halfway home in the set with a 12-7 lead, but the Muskies scored eight of the next 11 to tie at 15-15, and after six ties finally pulled away with a pair of kills by
Courtney Naser (
So.-Altoona, Wis.) plus kills by
Kathy Flanagan (
Jr.-Midlothian, Ill.) and
Brittini Scoles (
So.-Kewaskum, Wis.) to close the set.
Naser led the way with 12 kills, with Scoles adding 10 kills and
Allison Errthum (
So.-Joliet, Ill.) nine more. Naser also added a match-high five block assists, including two in the fourth set with setter
Taylor Levitt (
Jr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) as Lakeland stood tall late.
Caleigh Galvan (
Sr.-New Lenox, Ill.) led the team with a match-high 30 digs and once again reset the school record for digs in a season. Galvan now has 734 digs this season, breaking her record of 706 digs set last year, and she also holds the third-highest total in school history with 599 digs as a sophomore in 2013.
Levitt finished with 38 assists, while Errthum added 14 digs, with
Emma Bruder (
Fr.-Frankfort, Ill.) totaling 13 digs and
Brooke Aiazzi (
Sr.-Yerington, Nev.) adding 11.
NACC leader in kills Peyton McKenzie led Aurora with 16 kills but also had 11 attack errors in 56 attempts for a .089 hitting percentage. Emily Lines dished out 38 assists and also led the Spartans with 21 digs.
