Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warhawks slowly pull away to defeat Muskies 60-47

Kayla Clark (Jr.-West Bend, Wis.) scored a game-high 16 points as the Lakeland College women's basketball team pushed the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for more than a half before succumbing 60-47 Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Warhawks used separate runs in the second and third quarters to win their season opener and the first-ever matchup between the two schools. Lakeland lost its third consecutive game against a tough opponent and dropped to 0-3.

Clark scored the 10 points of the game for the Muskies and 12 in all in the first quarter as Lakeland trailed just 17-15 after the first 10 minutes. UW-Whitewater asserted control in the second quarter, though, going on a 12-2 run to take a 31-19 lead en route to a 33-24 halftime advantage.

Lakeland hung around in the third quarter and trailed by just eight when Bailey Grayvold (Jr.-Norway, Mich.) hit a short jumper to make it 40-32 with 6:08 left in the period. The Warhawks outscored the Muskies 13-1 the rest of the quarter, though, and took their largest lead at 53-33 after three quarters.

The Muskies scored eight straight points to start the fourth, capped by Miranda Jacobson (Fr.-Felch, Minn.) grabbing an offensive rebound and finishing to make it 53-41, but got no closer the rest of the way.

UW-Whitewater took advantage of 19 Lakeland turnovers and also won the rebounding battle 46-37. Brooke Trewyn finished with 12 points and nine rebounds and Olivia Freckmann added 12 points off the bench with perfect 6-for-6 shooting.

Clark hit 6 of 11 shot attempts and added five rebounds and three assists for Lakeland. Grayvold added 13 points, including 11 in the second half, and Maddy Doll (So.-Florence, Wis.) also added four points, six rebounds and four blocked shots.

The Muskies shot 32.7% from the field, including 3 of 15 from three-point land. UW-Whitewater was not much better from the field, hitting 23 of 65 (35.4%) but grabbing 20 offensive rebounds.

Lakeland continues its challenging non-conference schedule next Tuesday when it travels to face UW-Stevens Point at 5:30 p.m.
