HANCOCK, Mich. – The Lakeland College women's basketball team dialed long distance for a season-high 14 three-pointers, pulling away for a 77-46 win over Finlandia (Mich.) University Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play.
Trista Barron (
Sr.-Escanaba, Mich.) scored a career-high 20 points and hit four triples, while fellow Michigan native
Bailey Grayvold (
Jr.-Norway, Mich.) added 15 in a successful trip home for a total of six Lakeland players from northern Michigan.
The Muskies (3-7 overall) looked anything but rusty after an 11-day layoff between games. Lakeland shot 26 of 64 (a season-best 40.6%), and its 11 turnovers and 25.9% field percentage allowed to the hosts were both the second-best marks for the team this season.
The Muskies led 32-28 at halftime but outscored the Lions (0-9 overall) 45-18 in the second half. Lakeland went on a 15-0 run in the third quarter to turn a three-point lead into a 50-32 advantage, on the way to outscoring Finlandia 22-6 in the third quarter and 23-12 in the fourth.
Barron made 6 of 10 shots from the field, while Grayvold filled the stat sheet with nine rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Kayla Clark (
Jr.-West Bend, Wis.) also added 11 points, seven assists and four steals and hit three three-pointers, while
Callie Olson (
Sr.-Middleton, Wis.) added nine points off the bench with three more three-pointers.
The Muskies hit 14 of 32 three-point attempts in the game, including seven in each half, and also outrebounded the Lions 42-37.
Mikayla Hakela led Finlandia with 13 points. The Lions shot 14 of 54 from the field and committed 21 turnovers.
Lakeland returns to play Saturday to face Rockford (Ill.) University at 4:15 p.m. in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game.
