ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Lakeland College women's basketball team recorded 28 steals and dominated the second and third quarters in an 88-62 win over turnover-prone Rockford University Saturday in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game.
The Muskies outscored the hosts by 42 points over the second and third quarters to win in dominant fashion for the second time in three days. Lakeland improved to 4-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while Rockford dropped to 2-9 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
The Muskies took advantage of 35 Rockford turnovers to score nearly half (40) of their points off of opponent's miscues.
Rachel Stankevich (
So.-Goodman, Wis.) finished with seven steals as part of a near triple-double,
Bailey Grayvold (
Jr.-Norway, Mich.) added five steals,
Miranda Jacobson (
Fr.-Felch, Mich.) notched four and in all nine players finished with at least one steal for Lakeland.
Stankevich also added 20 points and 10 rebounds, making 10 of 14 shots from the field. That included a 6-for-6 performance in the third quarter when the Muskies outscored the Regents 34-10 to blow the game wide open.
Lakeland actually trailed 21-18 after one quarter but finished the second quarter on a 12-0 run over the final 4:28 to take a 41-26 halftime lead. Rockford committed 20 turnovers in the first half alone, and the Muskies really pulled away in the third quarter with 14 field goals to take a 75-36 lead after 30 minutes.
Trista Barron (
Sr.-Escanaba, Mich.) added 18 points, including four three-pointers, while Grayvold chipped in 11 points and six boards.
Kayla Clark (
Jr.-West Bend, Wis.) added nine points, five assists and three steals,
Maddy Doll (
So.-Florence, Wis.) chipped in seven points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots and Jacobson had the best game thus far of her freshman year, adding seven points and six rebounds.
Lakeland shot 39.8% for the game, making 33 of 83 shots. The Muskies also posted a huge 55-36 rebounding advantage, including 21 offensive boards.
Mallorie Getzelman led the Regents with 15 points. Rockford shot 24 of 57 (42.1%) but due to turnovers attempted 26 fewer shots than Lakeland.
The Muskies are back home Tuesday night when they host Marian University at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
