Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Muskies defeat Duhawks, lose to No. 1-ranked Ducks at triangular

Matt Stolz (So.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) totaled a career-high 18 kills and Kyle Krogstad (Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) added a double-double to lead the Lakeland College men's volleyball team to a four-set win over Loras (Iowa) College in the first match of the Muskies' home triangular Sunday at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies defeated the Duhawks 25-19, 25-10, 20-25, 25-17 in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League match, improving to 4-2 in the MCVL this year. Lakeland later on faced the No. 1-ranked team in the AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 15 Coaches Poll in Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.), hanging tough for two sets before falling in three sets, 25-23, 25-22, 25-10.

The Muskies (9-6 overall) won their first-ever meeting with the new program from Loras (2-10 overall), which is in its first season of varsity competition and just two days earlier picked up the first two wins in program history. Lakeland was in control almost the entire way, with the exception of a spell at the end of the third set, and finished hitting .260 for the match with 50 kills and 18 errors.

Stolz smashed his previous career high of 12 kills, hitting .342 with 18 kills and five errors in 38 attempts. Krogstad also added 10 kills and tied his career high with 17 digs.

Casey Bolda (So.-Honolulu, Hawaii) added nine kills and Tim Robbins (So.-Wheaton, Ill.) had eight kills and a team-high six blocks. Cole Aiazzi (Sr.-Yerington, Nev.) added 16 digs and Jordan Smith (Sr.-Channahon, Ill.) had 41 assists.

The Muskies later on put a scare into Stevens for the first two sets, taking the first two sets to the wire. Lakeland led 21-18 late in the first set and was still tied 23-23 before the Ducks (12-4 overall) closed it out with two kills.

The second set was also tied on 13 different occasions and Stevens led by just a point at 23-22 before scoring the final two points. The Muskies finally broke down in the third set against their powerful opponent, which finished the match hitting .330 with 43 kills and 13 errors.

Alec Redlich (Sr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) led Lakeland with nine kills and also tied Stolz for the team lead with nine digs. Smith had 26 assists and also added a team-best five blocks (two solo, three assisted). The Muskies dropped to 3-5 this season against nationally ranked teams.

In the other match of the triangular, Stevens defeated Loras 25-13, 25-19, 25-19.

Lakeland will next be in action on Saturday when it travels to River Forest, Ill., for a triangular hosted by Dominican (Ill.) University. The Muskies will face Dominican in an MCVL match at 11 a.m. and then will take on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 1 p.m.
