Concordia rides big advantage at the line to defeat Lakeland

MEQUON – The Lakeland College women's basketball team won the statistical battle in most areas but Concordia University Wisconsin won the one that mattered the most on the scoreboard to defeat the Muskies 62-54 Tuesday night at the R. John Buuck Fieldhouse.

The Falcons finished with a big advantage at the free throw line to defeat Lakeland for the second time this season and sweep the season series. The Muskies dropped to 7-14 overall and are now 6-10 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.

Concordia (15-5 overall, 11-4 NACC) wound up with a huge 34-11 advantage at the free throw line that proved to be the difference in the game. The Falcons made 19 of 34 from the stripe, enough to overcome 21 turnovers as well as Lakeland's huge advantage in shot attempts.

The Muskies shot 63 times from the field, 26 more times than Concordia. Lakeland finished with 14 offensive rebounds and also forced 21 turnovers by the hosts.

The visiting Muskies just did not knock in enough of those shots, though, shooting 33.3% (21 of 63). The Falcons, meanwhile, shot 51.4% (19 of 37), including 5 of 9 from three-point range, enough to keep Lakeland at bay in the second half.

The Muskies trailed by just two when Gaby Cappaert (Jr.-Stephenson, Mich.) converted a three-point play to make it 35-33 with 14:32 left. Concordia took over from there, though, making six of its next seven shots and building the lead to 14 at 53-39 with 8:22 to play.

Lakeland attempted to rally, scoring seven straight points to get as close as 55-48 after a short jumper by Rachel Stankevich (Fr.-Goodman, Wis.) with 4:52 left. The Falcons regained control, though, scoring the next five points to put it out of reach.

The Muskies got off to a good start and controlled all but the final minute of the first half. Lakeland led by seven points early and never trailed until Concordia's Brianna Wagner hit a short jumper for a 24-23 lead in the final minute, and then Katelyn Sewall hit a three-pointer with eight seconds left in the half for a 27-23 halftime edge.

Bailey Grayvold (So.-Norway, Mich.) led the Muskies with 15 points while Stankevich added 12 points and 12 rebounds. In addition to taking more shots and committing less turnovers, Lakeland also out-rebounded Concordia 35-34.

The Muskies will next play Saturday when they host Alverno College at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
