Lakeland loses two close ones in Clermont on third day of spring break

CLERMONT, Fla. – The third day of spring break was a tough one for the Lakeland College softball team, which lost twice in the final inning Tuesday afternoon at the PFX Spring Games.

The Muskies were defeated by Cornell (Iowa) College 5-4 in eight innings in their first game of the morning. Lakeland then lost to Westfield State (Mass.) University 6-4 in the second game of the day, as the Owls scored the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh inning.

The Muskies (4-6 overall) had a rather quiet day at the plate with a combined 11 hits over the two games. Lakeland had answers to both of its opponents' big innings, though, only to come up just short late in both contests.

Cornell (5-1 overall) scored three times in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead, but the Muskies fought back with three in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Alexandrya Smaglik (Sr.-Manitowoc, Wis.) scored on an error and Bella Wilkinson (Fr.-Evergreen Park, Ill.) followed with a two-run single for a 4-3 lead.

Lakeland was one out away from a victory, but the Rams scored the tying run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single to tie the game. The game went to international tiebreaker rules in the eighth, and the Muskies were unable to score after getting a runner to third, and Cornell took advantage with a run-scoring single with one out to bring in the winning run.

Lakeland fell behind 4-0 in the second inning against Westfield State but came right back with four in the bottom of the inning. Hailey Jester (Fr.-Salem, Wis.) and Mikayla Hilton (So.-Port Washington, Wis.) both walked with the bases loaded to drive in runs, Wilkinson scored on an error, and Sami Jo Williams (So.-Sussex, Wis.) singled in a run.

The Muskies were unable to score again, though, and the Owls (3-3 overall) finally went ahead in the seventh when Emma Dunbar singled to right to drive in a pair of runs for what turned out to be the deciding hit.

Rosa Gonzalez (Fr.-Elwood, Ill.) had three hits over two games to lead Lakeland at the plate. Williams and Wilkinson both added two hits each.

The Muskies are back on the diamond Thursday when they face Mount Ida (Mass.) College at 11 a.m. and Wheaton (Ill.) College at 1 p.m.
