Muskies come from behind in extra inning to get second baseball win

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Drew Richard (Fr.-Kieler, Wis.) reached on a fielder's choice and Brady Callahan (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) came around to score the winning run on a throwing error as the Lakeland College baseball team defeated McDaniel (Md.) College 9-8 in eight innings in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday.

The Muskies came from behind for their second win of the season and a split of two games on the final day of their spring break trip. The Green Terror dominated the first game, winning 18-1, but Lakeland shook it off and improved to 2-10 this season and on its spring trip.

The Muskies trailed most of the way in the nightcap but rallied from deficits of 6-2 and 7-5, scoring in each of the final three innings. Luke Bacci (Jr.-Grayslake, Ill.) singled to score Kyle Delahaut (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) to cut the deficit to 7-6 in the sixth, and Jared Schaaf (So.-Sauk City, Wis.) singled with two outs to score Richard and tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.

McDaniel went back ahead in the top of the eighth, as Antonio Rosanova singled and Chris Morris came around to score after an error. Lakeland fought back in the bottom of the inning, though, as Bryce Skelton (Jr.-Delavan, Wis.) and Callahan wrapped singles around a sacrifice bunt by Bacci. Jared Rear (Jr.-Belleville, Wis.) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, and Richard then reached with the bases loaded. Skelton scored on the play, and Callahan also came home on the play after a throwing error by the second baseman.

Bacci finished with three hits and drove in two runs, Callahan added two hits and Delahaut scored two runs. Nine different players accounted for the Muskies' 12 hits, and eight different players scored runs.

Lakeland had a tough time in the opener, as the Green Terror scored five runs in the first, six in the third and three more in both the fourth and fifth frames. Kenny Pekarek (So.-Sagola, Mich.) had two hits and drove in the only run, while Skelton added two hits and scored the lone run.

The Muskies now return home and are scheduled to play their home opener next Sunday, March 22 against Northland College. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at noon.
