Luke Mandich (
Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) and
Ryan Boettcher (
Sr.-Bonduel, Wis.) both were in command on the mound and the Lakeland College baseball team swept both ends of its home opener doubleheader with shutouts Sunday afternoon.
The Muskies defeated the LumberJacks by scores of 1-0 and 2-0 on a brisk afternoon on the Muskies' home diamond. Mandich and Boettcher both threw complete game shutouts as the Muskies swept both ends of a doubleheader via shutout for the first time since May 7, 2011 against Edgewood College.
Mandich was superefficient in pitching a three-hitter in the first game, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out three in a game that lasted just one hour, 15 minutes. Boettcher took an opposite tact in the second game, scattering 10 hits and a walk but striking out six and stranding nine runners.
Lakeland won in its first outing since returning from a spring break trip to Florida and improved to 4-10 overall this season. The Muskies did so with just a single hit in the first game and a rally in the bottom of the sixth inning in the second contest.
In the opener, Lakeland scored the game's only run in the bottom of the first.
Brady Callahan (
Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) reached on a one-out walk, went to third on a single by
A.J. Dollinger (
Sr.-Ashwaubenon, Wis.) and then scored on the back end of a double-steal after Dollinger beat a throw to second base.
Northland's Kyle Strom matched Mandich from that point and pitched a complete game one-hitter. Strom struck out three and walked one and faced just one batter over the minimum in his six innings.
Both Boettcher and the LumberJacks' Logan Schuman threw up zeros on the board in the second game until the bottom of the sixth.
Bryce Skelton (
Jr.-Delavan, Wis.) led off the inning with a double to right-center, and Boettcher followed by reaching on an error.
Travis Stever (
So.-Brillion, Wis.) then laid down a bunt and reached on a fielder's choice while the throw to third base was late for Skelton, and all three runners moved up with Skelton scoring to break the scoreless tie.
Kyle Delahaut (
Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) then walked to load the bases again, and
Brandon Glaeser (
Jr.-Newton, Wis.) walked with the bases loaded to drive in the second run.
Skelton had two hits in the game for Lakeland, while Matt Alberino was 3-for-3 at the plate for Northland. Schuman allowed six hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and three walks in taking the loss.
The Muskies are home again on Saturday when they host Wisconsin Lutheran College for their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener. The first game of a twinbill is scheduled to start at noon.
