MARQUETTE, Mich. –
Hailey Jester (
Fr.-Salem, Wis.) hit a two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Lakeland College softball team a 7-6 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior Sunday afternoon at the Finlandia University Dome Tourney.
The Muskies picked up their first win of the season in dramatic fashion, finishing the two-day event on a high note. Lakeland finished the weekend with a 1-3 record in its season-opening games played at the Superior Dome on the campus of Northern Michigan University.
Jester posted her first collegiate home run and second hit in 12 at bats on the weekend, homering to left to win the game. The rally started when
Bella Wilkinson (
Fr.-Evergreen Park, Ill.) singled to right with one out and
Calie Delisi (
Fr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) singled to left with two out to keep the inning alive.
The Muskies hit three homers and rallied from a 6-3 deficit in the sixth inning against the Yellowjackets.
Jocelyn Yeager (
So.-Elm Grove, Wis.) hit a solo home run in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-4, and
Angela Tribuzio (
Fr.-Huntley, Ill.) also hit a solo homer in the second to tie the game at 3-3.
Lakeland opened the invitational on Saturday with an 8-0 loss to Simpson (Iowa) College in five innings. The Muskies also lost to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 9-5 on Saturday and fell to Carroll University 7-1 in their first game on Sunday.
Yeager finished with five hits and a pair of solo home runs for the weekend. Tribuzio also recorded four hits, two homers and three runs batted in, and
Mikayla Hilton (
So.-Port Washington, Wis.) also added four hits.
Elizabeth Zimmerman (
Sr.-Shawano, Wis.) picked up the win in relief in the finale, throwing 5 2/3 innings and allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out three.
The Muskies went north for their first games but now will head far south for their next contests. Lakeland will face Emerson (Mass.) College next Sunday, March 8, in its opening game of a week-long trip to Clermont, Fla.
