Anthony Puccini (
So.-Downers Grove, Ill.) piled up a career-high 15 kills and the Lakeland College men's volleyball team swept Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in three sets Friday night in the first match of a non-conference doubleheader at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies breezed past the Crimson Wave 25-14, 25-12, 25-16 but fell in their second match to finish with a split on the evening. Rivier (N.H.) University, ranked 12th in the latest AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 15 Coaches Poll, defeated Lakeland in four sets, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-22, dropping the Muskies to 11-10 overall on the season.
Puccini was the star of the first match, with his 15 kills coming in just 19 attempts. The sophomore finished with an incredible .684 attack percentage and led a Muskie attack that included 36 kills and just 10 errors in 67 attempts for a .388 hitting percentage.
Lakeland trailed only twice briefly early in the first set, and Calumet (1-19 overall) wasn't able to force as much as a tie after the score was 1-1 in the second set. The Crimson Wave finished with a .013 attack percentage with 21 kills and 20 errors in 79 attempts.
Dan Matijevic (

The Muskies had ample opportunities to win the third and fourth sets. The third set was tied 17 times, the last time at 22-22 before Rivier used an attack error and two service aces to clinch it. Lakeland also led by five on several occasions in the fourth set, the last time at 16-11 before the Raiders scored 11 of the next 13 points to take control.
