Savannah Stenlund (
Fr.-Rapid River, Mich.) and
Jasmine Suarez (
So.-Hobart, Ind.) both pitched complete games and the Lakeland College softball team swept Alverno College in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The Muskies won the first game 6-3 and then came back for a 3-0 victory in the nightcap. Lakeland snapped a nine-game losing streak and improved to 8-18 overall and 3-9 in the NACC, while Alverno dropped to 16-10 overall and 6-6 in league play.
Stenlund tossed all seven innings in the opener, allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out six and walking two. The freshman has been the team's top starting pitcher, allowing three runs or less in four of her last five starts, but picked up the loss in four of those five games.
She finally received some run support on Saturday, as the Muskies picked her up after Alverno rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to tie the game at 3-3.
Angela Tribuzio (
Fr.-Huntley, Ill.) hit a solo home run and
Ashley Hough (
Sr.-Rapid River, Mich.) doubled to drive in
Rosa Gonzalez (
Fr.-Elwood, Ill.) and
Jessica Beaudry (
Fr.-Gladstone, Mich.), and Stenlund held the visitors to two hits over the final four innings to get her third win of the season.
Suarez gave Lakeland an outstanding pitching performance in the second game with a two-hit shutout. Making just her second start of the season, she struck out two and walked one for her second collegiate shutout.
The Muskies furnished run support for her quickly, as Beaudry singled to score
Sami Jo Williams (
So.-Sussex, Wis.) in the first inning and Gonzalez walked with the bases loaded in the second to bring in
Calie Delisi (
Fr.-Oak Forest, Ill.). Lakeland added another run in the fifth on Tribuzio's RBI single to score Gonzalez.
The Muskies return to the field again tomorrow to face Mount Mary University for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The games were rescheduled from Thursday and will be played on the campus of Alverno.
