MILWAUKEE – The Lakeland College softball team hammered out 33 hits in two games in an easy doubleheader sweep of Mount Mary University Sunday afternoon in non-conference play.
The Muskies defeated the Blue Angels 20-4 in five innings in the first game and then added a 9-1 victory in the second game. Lakeland stretched its winning streak to four games and is now 10-18 overall on the season.
Eleven different players had hits over the two games as the Muskies received contributions from throughout the lineup.
Sami Jo Williams (
So.-Sussex, Wis.) had six hits, four runs batted in and seven runs scored,
Ashley Hough (
Sr.-Rapid River, Mich.) had five hits, four RBIs and scored seven runs, and
Mikayla Hilton (So.-Port Washington, Wis.) added five hits and four runs driven in.
Both Hough and
Jessica Beaudry (
Fr.-Gladstone, Mich.) had home runs in the first game. Beaudry hit a three-run homer in the second inning to give Lakeland an 8-2 lead, and Hough followed the next inning with a two-run shot to make it 10-2.
The Muskies scored in every inning in the first game against the undermanned Blue Angels (5-19 overall), with two runs in the first, six in the second, five in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth. Williams was 4-for-5 with four RBIs and five runs scored, Hough was 3-for-4 with four runs, Hilton was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and
Rosa Gonzalez (
Fr.-Elwood, Ill.) also scored four runs.
Savannah Stenlund (
Fr.-Rapid River, Mich.) pitched three innings and allowed four hits and four runs with five strikeouts in earning the win.
Brooke Paige (
Fr.-Harbor Springs, Mich.) came on in relief and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just a single hit.
Lakeland needed a little more time to break open the second game, leading 2-0 before scoring three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Six different players had two hits each led by Hough (2-for-5, two RBIs, three runs scored) and Beaudry (2-for-4, two RBIs).
Jasmine Suarez (
So.-Hobart, Ind.) had her second straight outstanding start, pitching a complete game and allowing just one run on three hits while striking out ten.
The Muskies return to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Monday when they face Wisconsin Lutheran College at 3 p.m. in Milwaukee.
