Lakeland grinds out two close wins over Maranatha Baptist

Travis Stever (So.-Brillion, Wis.) tripled and came in to score on a dropped fly ball as the Lakeland College baseball team defeated Maranatha Baptist University 4-3 in extra innings to sweep a doubleheader Thursday afternoon.

The Muskies came from behind with two runs in the seventh to tie it and then the winning run in the eighth to win the second game. Lakeland also defeated Maranatha 4-1 in the first game of the twinbill, and with the two wins improved to 9-24 overall this season.

The Muskies trailed 3-1 late in the second game after the Sabercats (5-12 overall) scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead. Lakeland was down to its last out when Ryan Boettcher (Sr.-Bonduel, Wis.) singled through the right side to score Sam Martin (So.-Milton, Wis.) to make it 3-2, and A.J. Dollinger (Sr.-Ashwaubenon, Wis.) followed two batters later with a sharp single to left center to score Boettcher to tie the game.

Starting pitcher Jared Schaaf (So.-Sauk City, Wis.) retired Maranatha in order in the top of the eighth, and Stever led off the bottom of the inning with a booming drive to right center that got to the wall. He motored to third for his second triple of the season, and came home when Brandon Glaeser (Jr.-Newton, Wis.) hit a fly ball down the right field line that was dropped by MBU right fielder Wesley Wagner. The ball briefly bounded away, allowing Stever to score the winning run.

Schaaf threw a complete game and allowed nine hits and three runs with two walks and two strikeouts to earn his first collegiate win. Brothers Adam and Caleb Courtney combined to pitch for the Sabercats, with Adam Courtney taking the loss in relief after coming on with two outs in the seventh.

The Muskies also won a briskly played pitchers' duel in the first game, making the most of its six hits by scoring two runs each in the third and fourth innings.

Boettcher hit a grounder just inside the first base bag for a double that scored Glaeser and Stever to make it 2-0 in the third inning. Glaeser and Brady Callahan (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) then both added RBI singles in the fourth inning to give Lakeland a 4-0 lead.

Maranatha Baptist was shut down by Muskie starter Christopher Leopold (Fr.-Bolingbrook, Ill.) until Cody Borland hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to make it 4-1. Leopold would strand two more runners to close out the game, though, finishing with a complete game and allowing six hits while striking out six for his first collegiate victory.

Boettcher led Lakeland offensively in the doubleheader with four hits and three RBIs, including a 3-for-4 performance at the plate in the second game. Both Boettcher and Jared Rear (Jr.-Belleville, Wis.) also stole two bases each in the second contest as the Muskies stole seven bases total in that game.

The Muskies are on the road Saturday to face Concordia University Chicago at noon in River Forest, Ill.
