Muskies honor military but fall twice to Eagles in baseball home finale

A tough day on the field was still a successful one off for the Lakeland College baseball team, which lost both games of a doubleheader against Edgewood College Sunday afternoon.

The Muskies were defeated by scores of 6-0 and 11-3 by the Eagles in games played at Wildwood Park in Sheboygan. Lakeland dropped to 9-26 overall and 3-13 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and was officially eliminated from contention for the NACC Tournament.

The day was a success, though, as the Muskie baseball program hosted its first-ever Military Day honoring veterans and members of the military. Donations and raffles resulted in raising more than $600 for the Wounded Warrior Project, a charity that aims to assist and provide programs and services for injured service members.

Lakeland wore camouflage-colored jerseys for the occasion as it played in Sheboygan at Wildwood Park for the first time in five years. The Muskies also played their final home games of the season, with only games on the road at Concordia University Chicago and Concordia University Wisconsin remaining this week.

The Muskies received a good pitching effort from Luke Mandich (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) in the opener but could only muster six hits against Edgewood starter Andy Swanson. Mandich threw a complete game and held the Eagles (16-16 overall, 10-6 NACC) to just three runs in eight innings before the guests tacked on three more in the ninth.

Swanson struck out five in eight innings and made key pitches when he needed to, as Lakeland was one hit shy of causing serious trouble on numerous occasions. Brady Callahan (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) had two hits in the opener, but the Muskies stranded nine runners, including three in the eighth and two in both the fourth and ninth innings.

Lakeland got off to a good start in the second game and led after four innings before being done in by errors. Five errors contributed to eight of Edgewood's 11 runs being unearned, including all five runs in a five-run fifth inning.

The Muskies took an early lead in the first inning when Luke Bacci (Jr.-Grayslake, Ill.) singled to lead off and later scored on a ground out by Bryce Skelton (Jr.-Delavan, Wis.). Lakeland later took a 3-2 lead in the fourth, as Jared Rear (Jr.-Belleville, Wis.) scored after A.J. Dollinger (Sr.-Ashwaubenon, Wis.) reached on an error and Dollinger came home on a single by Kyle Delahaut (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.).

Edgewood scored five times in the fifth and added another in the sixth and three more in the seventh. In all, ten of the Eagles' 11 runs in the game were unearned against Muskie pitchers Ryan Boettcher (Sr.-Bonduel, Wis.) and Cal Zimborski (Fr.-Waukesha, Wis.).

Boettcher went six innings and allowed six hits and eight runs (one earned), while Zimborski finished the final three innings and allowed three hits and three unearned runs. Bridger Berrett pitched a complete game for Edgewood and scattered eight hits among eight different Muskie players.

The Muskies will face Concordia Chicago on Monday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. in River Forest, Ill.
