Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Muskies impressive in opening women’s volleyball win over Finlandia

Kathy Flanagan (Jr.-Midlothian, Ill.) dominated with 10 kills and the Lakeland College women's volleyball team made the first home event of the school year a successful one with a three-set sweep of Finlandia (Mich.) University Tuesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies took advantage of a rare season opener at home, playing their earliest home match of any season since beginning the 2004 season against Lawrence University, also played on Sept. 1. Lakeland also won its overall season opener for the first time since 2012

The Muskies hit a robust .325 for the night, with 39 kills and just 12 errors in 83 attack attempts. Flanagan led the way with a near-perfect performance, with her 10 kills coming in just 12 attempts with no errors for a .833 hitting percentage. The junior middle blocker also added a team-high three blocks (one solo, two assisted).

Allison Errthum (So.-Joliet, Ill.) also added eight kills with just two errors in 15 attempts (.400 attack percentage), Brittini Scoles (So.-Kewaskum, Wis.) added seven kills, LeShay Jones (Sr.-Pontiac, Mich.) chipped in six and Courtney Naser (So.-Altoona, Wis.) also posted five kills off the bench in just 10 attempts.

Lakeland also served seven aces, including three by Brooke Aiazzi (Sr.-Yerington, Nev.) and two more by Taylor Levitt (Jr.-Schaumburg, Ill.), who also led the team with 18 assists. Newcomer Jessa Coker (Jr.-Macomb, Ill.) also added 15 assists.

The Muskies trailed only briefly early in the first and third sets and led wire-to-wire in the second set. The only nervous moment came in the first set when the Lions whittled a 10-point deficit down to three late in the set before Lakeland finally closed the set out with a kill by Scoles.

Caleigh Galvan (Sr.-New Lenox, Ill.) led the way defensively with 10 digs, with Levitt adding seven digs. Finlandia was led by Katelyn Anderson with five kills, seven digs and two service aces, but as a team the Lions hit .000 with 18 kills and 18 errors in 72 attacks.

Lakeland also was successful in the junior varsity match between the two teams, defeating the Lions 2-0 in a best-of-three match.

The Muskies are on the road this weekend, traveling to Winona, Minn., for the Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic hosted by St. Mary's (Minn.) University. Lakeland opens on Friday against Luther (Iowa) College at 6 p.m.
