Brittini Scoles (
So.-Kewaskum, Wis.) and
Hannah Scherer (Fr.-Chillicothe, Ill.) hammered home nine kills each and the Lakeland College women's volleyball team swept away Luther (Iowa) College in three sets in their first match of the Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic hosted by St. Mary's (Minn.) University on Friday.
The Muskies defeated the Norse 25-21, 25-9, 25-20 in their opening match before taking their first loss of the season to St. Norbert College 25-13, 25-21, 25-14. Lakeland is now 2-1 on the young season.
The Muskies led almost from start to finish against Luther, only trailing briefly early in each set. They did so with a solid hitting performance, attacking at a .224 rate with 39 kills to just 13 errors and also adding eight service aces.
Scoles led with a .318 attack percentage with nine kills and just two errors in 22 attempts. Scherer was not far behind at .292 with the same number of kills and errors in 24 attempts.
Courtney Naser (
So.-Altoona, Wis.) and
Allison Errthum (
So.-Joliet, Ill.) also had seven kills each.
Taylor Levitt (
Jr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) finished with 19 assists with
Jessa Coker (
Jr.-Macomb, Ill.) adding 14 assists, and
Caleigh Galvan (
Sr.-New Lenox, Ill.) totaled a match-high 23 digs.
Lakeland was unable to duplicate its performance in the second match, with 24 attack errors and a .019 attack percentage against the Green Knights. The Muskies hit .000 or worse in two of the three sets.
Scherer led Lakeland with seven kills with Naser adding six kills. Coker led the way with 12 assists and Galvan had 14 digs.
The Muskies are back in action with two more matches Saturday, opening against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 10 a.m. and then closing the invitational against UW-La Crosse at 2 p.m. UWSP is currently the No. 7-ranked team in the AVCA NCAA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll.
