Jonathan Colucci scored 9:08 into the contest for Augustana (Ill.) College and the Lakeland College men's soccer team went down by a 1-0 score Saturday afternoon at home in a non-conference match.
The Muskies never were able to get the equalizer in a scrappy match that was played mostly in the midfield. The teams combined for just eight shots on goal and 17 shots total, but Augustana improved to 3-0 all-time in the series and won the first meeting between the schools in 10 years.
Colucci's goal came with an assist from Shonari Phillips in the 10th minute. The Vikings generated just two more shots on goal, as
Thomis Mannebach (
So.-Florence, Wis.) made two saves in net for Lakeland (1-4 overall).
The Muskies' good chances were few.
Mirko Tadic (
Sr.-Santiago, Chile) had the game's first chance just 1:19 in, but Augustana (2-2 overall) goalkeeper Jeff Bell made the save.
Lakeland would not have another shot on goal until the 57th minute, when Tadic again put a ball on goal that Bell saved. The senior would get off two more shots in the second half but neither was a serious threat, while
Grant Meerdink (
So.-Oostburg, Wis.) also had a pair of attack from his defender spot, with one of them on goal and saved by Bell.
The Vikings outshot the Muskies 10-7, but Lakeland finished with the 5-3 edge in shots on goal. The match also included 29 fouls.
Augustana remained undefeated against Lakeland and won the first meeting between the schools since 2005. The Vikings won on the Muskies' home field 2-1 that year and also defeated Lakeland 1-0 at Augustana in 2004.
The Muskies are in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Appleton to face Lawrence University at 7 p.m.
