Mimi Pulido (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) continued her early-season goal-scoring prowess but the Lakeland College women's soccer team was victimized by two Beloit College goals late in the first half in a 4-2 loss Saturday in the Muskies' home opener.
Pulido scored goals number seven and eight on the season, including her second goal of the match that came on a free kick from near midfield. Her eight goals currently rank second in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, but the Muskies dropped to 1-4 overall.
The Muskies and Buccaneers alternated goals in the early going. Beloit took the lead just 8:17 into the match when Jordyn Murch scored off a crossing pass by Courtney Ceurvost. The Muskies tied it just 16 seconds later, though, when Pulido took the ball shortly after the kickoff, weaved through the defense and found the net to tie it at 1-1.
Beloit (3-2 overall) went back ahead when Ceurvost scored to make it 2-1 in the 16th minute, but Pulido answered again shortly after. A foul on Beloit allowed for a free kick from about 40 yards out, and Pulido put it over the keeper and in to tie the score again.
The Buccaneers took the lead for good when Genesis Dade scored on a breakaway at 39:36 of the match, and Beloit added another just before halftime when Mallory Gribble passed ahead to Dade, who scored with 1:20 left in the first half for a 4-2 lead that would hold up the rest of the way.
Scoring attempts were relatively few for Lakeland after its early tallies. Pulido and
Taryn Allen (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) both had chances late in the first half but were stopped by Beloit keeper Haylee Irwin, who came on early after an injury to starter Emma Schroer. Both had one chance each in the second half, but the Muskies were unable to generate any other serious pressure
Pulido attempted five shots (four on goal) while Allen also attempted four shots (two on goal) in her collegiate debut.
Tiffany Fischer (
So.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) had the other shot attempt early in the first half.
Melissa Noll (
Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) made 10 saves in goal, stifling several strong opportunities for the visitors. Beloit finished with a 21-10 advantage in shot attempts.
Lakeland is home again on Wednesday when it hosts Mount Mary University for a non-conference match at 5 p.m.
