Taryn Allen (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) and
Melissa Noll (
Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) both scored their first career collegiate goals and the Lakeland College women's soccer team scored its second win of the season with a 4-0 home victory over Mount Mary University Wednesday night in a non-conference match.
A number of players got into the act in producing goals, as four different players found the back of the net, including three scoring for the first time this season. Six players in all were involved in the goals as the Muskies improved to 2-4 this season.
Lakeland faced a tricky situation, as Mount Mary (0-6 overall) played with just 10 players. The Muskies controlled possession throughout the match but it took some time to get quality scoring chances and firmly assert superiority.
Lakeland eventually found its stride, though, in building a 3-0 lead. The Muskies also showed they can find goals from other sources than leading scorer
Mimi Pulido (
Sheboygan, Wis.), though the sophomore still was involved in the team's first goal when she served in a corner kick into the box and
Tiffany Fischer (
So.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) found the left side of the net 16:18 into the match.
Lakeland struck again in the 26th minute when Allen dribbled through the defense and beat goalkeeper Becki Onan. Her first college goal made the score 2-0, and the Muskies scored again just over five minutes later when
Becca Giessen (
So.-West Bend, Wis.) hit the post with a shot and
Brianne Frank (
Jr.-Plain, Wis.) deposited the rebound for her second career goal and to make the score 3-0.
The hosts added one more goal in the second half. Allen crossed a pass from right to left in the box to Noll, who flipped the ball into the net at 63:31 for her first collegiate goal in her first match playing in the field after starting the first four games this year in goal.
Lakeland cruised home the rest of the way and finished the match with a 44-1 advantage in shot attempts. The Muskies peppered Onan with 26 shots on goal, and the NCAA Division III leader in saves made 22 saves in net.
Allen finished with 18 shot attempts, including eight on goal. Fischer attempted eight shots, seven on goal, while Pulido added six shots, four on goal.
The Muskies also benefited from having all 16 players on their roster healthy for the first time this season, as goalkeeper
Jessica Carter (
Sr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) made her season debut. Carter had to handle the ball rarely and needed to make just one save for the shutout.
Lakeland opens Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Saturday when it welcomes Alverno College for a home match at 3:30 p.m.
