Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Muskies break loose in second half for comeback win over Rockford

Franco Herrera (Sr.-Naucalpan, Mexico) and Grant Meerdink (So.-Oostburg, Wis.) both scored twice and the Lakeland College men's soccer team rode four second half goals to a 5-2 victory over Rockford University in both teams' Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener.

Mirko Tadic (Sr.-Santiago, Chile) also added three assists as the Muskies won for the first time in four matches. Lakeland also surpassed its scoring total for the first six matches combined and improved to 2-5 overall.

The Muskies actually trailed late in the first half after the Regents (2-5 overall, 0-1 NACC) scored the match's first goal. Tyler Burg scored in the 35th minute for Rockford, but Lakeland evened the score in the 40th minute when Herrera and Tadic executed a give-and-go on the right side of the box, with Herrera converting his first goal of the season.

The Muskies took control with aflurry of goals early in the second half. Meerdink scored his first two goals of his Lakeland career and Herrera added his second, all in a span of 12 minutes. Meerdink's second gave the hosts their fourth straight goal and a 4-1 lead.

The Regents got one back when Mike Mottonen scored in the 64th minute, but then gave one back just under six minutes later. Charles Apostolik (Fr.-New Castle, Colo.) applied the pressure from a forward position and Rockford deflected his touch into its own goal to make it 5-2.

Lakeland controlled possession and finished with a 15-6 lead in shots and a 12-4 margin in shots on goal. Logan Massey (Sr.-New Franken, Wis.) came on in goal in the second half and earned the win.

The Muskies are home again Tuesday when they welcome the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for a non-conference match at 4:30 p.m.
