Galvan sets digs record as Lakeland sweeps pair from IIT

CHICAGO – Caleigh Galvan (Sr.-New Lenox, Ill.) added another to her collection of records at Lakeland College, setting the school mark for career digs as the Muskies women's volleyball team swept a pair of matches against Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday.

Lakeland swept IIT in three sets in both matches, winning 25-11, 25-14, 25-19 in the first match and 25-17, 25-13, 25-9 in the second. The Muskies improved to 6-8 overall this season and handed the Scarlet Hawks their second and third losses of the season, dropping IIT to 5-3.

Galvan totaled 34 digs over the two matches and broke the school mark of 1,882 digs held by Brittanie Paulus since 2009, setting the new mark in the second set of the second match on Saturday. She now holds the school mark with 1,889 career digs, putting her just 111 digs shy of 2,000 for her career.

Galvan now holds Lakeland records for most digs in a match, in a season and a career, as well as for the highest digs per set average in a season. Saturday also included a formal changing of the guard of sorts, as Paulus was in attendance to see Galvan break her old record that stood for six years.

The Muskies were dominant in both matches, and nearly flawless in the first. Lakeland hit .340 in the opener with 41 kills and just eight errors in 97 attempts, and it continued in the second as IIT led just once briefly in the second match.

Allison Errthum (So.-Joliet, Ill.) starred in the first match with 11 kills and just one attack error as well as 12 digs. Emilie Schartner (Fr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.), also was perfect attacking with nine kills in nine attempts, while Kathy Flanagan (Jr.-Midlothian, Ill.) added seven kills.

Megan Samson (Fr.-Peosta, Iowa) led in the second match with the best performance of her young college career, finishing with nine kills. Errthum added eight kills and Taylor Levitt (Jr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) finished with 18 assists and four service aces.

The Muskies step back into the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference on Wednesday when they travel to Milwaukee to face Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m.
