MILWAUKEE – Megan Kroll made two go-ahead free throws for Milwaukee School of Engineering with 19 seconds remaining and the Lakeland College women's basketball team went cold late in a 68-65 loss Wednesday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game.
The Muskies followed the script for a big road win for 35 minutes and held an eight-point lead with just over five minutes to play. The Raiders rallied late, though, to move into a tie for first in the conference at 8-1 (10-4 overall), while Lakeland was foiled in its attempt to reach the .500 mark for the first time this season dropped to 6-8 overall and 5-4 in the NACC.
The Muskies led 63-55 after
Jessica Beaudry (
Fr.-Gladstone, Mich.) scored inside with 5:36 left in the game. Lakeland would miss its final seven shots from the field, though, and also committed four turnovers over that stretch.
MSOE also got little done from the floor late, with just one field goal in the final 5:06. The Raiders chipped away at the free throw line, though, and Kroll scored her team's final seven points from the line over the last 1:24.
Her two free throws with 19 seconds left gave MSOE the lead back at 66-65, and she later hit two more free throws with six seconds remaining to put the hosts up three. Lakeland had a final shot just before the buzzer, but a three-pointer by
Kayla Clark (
Jr.-West Bend, Wis.) was just off the side of the rim.
The Muskies forced MSOE into 26 turnovers and for most of the evening had an answer for every MSOE run.
Lakeland took its largest lead in the second quarter when
Bailey Grayvold (
Jr.-Norway, Mich.) made two free throws to make it 28-19 with 5:38 before halftime, and the Muskies held a 37-33 halftime lead.
The Raiders rallied in the second half and led briefly on several occasions, including twice taking a two-point lead. Lakeland finished the third quarter with an 8-0 run, though, with Clark's layup just before the buzzer giving the Muskies a 56-49 lead.
Grayvold scored 16 points and made 9 of 10 from the foul line.
Rachel Stankevich (
So.-Goodman, Wis.) finished with 13 points and seven rebounds and both Clark and
Trista Barron (
Sr.-Escanaba, Mich.) scored 11 points each.
Lakeland shot 39.0% (23 of 59), including 4 of 18 from three-point range (22.2%). MSOE also won the rebounding battle 41-27.
Kroll led the Raiders with 22 points and 14 rebounds but also committed 11 turnovers against the Muskies' pressure defense. MSOE shot 46.0% from the field, making 23 of 50 shots, including 6 of 9 from three-point range.
The Muskies are back home Saturday when they host Rockford (Ill.) University at 4:15 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
