The Lakeland College women's basketball team held Rockford (Ill.) University to 27.3% shooting and set the tone early with its defense in an 83-42 win Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies opened the game on a 12-0 run and held the Regents scoreless for the game's first seven minutes, 16 seconds. Lakeland held Rockford to just five made field goals in 26 attempts in the first half (19.2%) and swept the season series while improving to 7-8 overall and 6-4 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
The Muskies raced out to a 26-point lead in the first half and continued to build the lead the rest of the way. Lakeland was dominant defensively, forcing 25 turnovers while also adding in a 45-31 rebounding advantage.
Offensively, the Muskies had one of their more efficient games this season. Lakeland shot 46.8% (29 of 62) and also tied a season-high with 14 three-pointers, hitting 14 of 27 from deep (51.9%), including 9 of 17 in the first half.
Kayla Clark (
Jr.-West Bend, Wis.),
Callie Olson (
Sr.-Middleton, Wis.) and
Lexie Greenheck (
Sr.-Oostburg, Wis.) all hit three three-pointers each.
Bailey Grayvold (
Jr.-Norway, Mich.) and
Trista Barron (
Sr.-Escanaba, Mich.) also made two triples each, and the game ended in fitting fashion with one more three-ball as
Brooke Wilder-Corrigan (
Jr.-Lake Linden, Mich.) banked one home in the game's final minute.
Grayvold led Lakeland with 17 points and also added eight rebounds and four steals. Clark scored 12 and posted a game-high four assists while Greenheck also added 11 points.
Jessica Beaudry (
Fr.-Gladstone, Mich.) led the team with nine rebounds,
Maddy Doll (
So.-Florence, Wis.) finished with eight rebounds and four blocked shots and
Gaby Cappaert (
Jr.-Fremont, Calif.) also tied for game honors with four steals.
Rockford (2-13 overall, 0-10 NACC) was led by Mallorie Getzelman with 20 points and eight rebounds. No other player scored more than six points as the Regents made 15 of 55 field goal attempts.
The Muskies continue their three-game homestand on Tuesday when they host Edgewood College at 7 p.m.
