Stifling defense helps Lakeland pull away for eighth win in nine games

FOND DU LAC – The Lakeland College women's basketball team held Marian University to 31.4% shooting and forced 28 turnovers in a decisive 68-39 win Wednesday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Sadoff Gymnasium.

The Muskies held the Sabres to 14 first-half points and forced 14 turnovers in each half in sweeping the season series. Lakeland won for the eighth time in nine games and improved to 10-8 overall.

The Muskies also improved to 9-4 in the NACC and remain in a tie for fourth in a hotly contested conference race. Lakeland remains two games behind co-leaders Concordia University Wisconsin and Wisconsin Lutheran College, with a game at one of its fellow fourth-place sharers in Benedictine (Ill.) University on Saturday at 4:15 p.m.

Marian (5-13 overall, 3-10 NACC) led only briefly in the opening minutes but hung tough most of the first half before the Muskies finished the second quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 28-14 halftime lead. Trista Barron (Sr.-Escanaba, Mich.) scored five straight points, and Bailey Grayvold (Jr.-Norway, Mich.) ended the first half with a jumper just before the second quarter clock ran out.

Lakeland led 38-23 midway through the third quarter when it went on another run to blow the game wide open, outscoring the Sabres 28-5 over the next 7:37. Gaby Cappaert (Sr.-Stephenson, Mich.) capped it with a steal and a layup, giving the Muskies their largest lead at 66-28.

Grayvold finished with a team-high 15 points and added five assists and six steals, Barron scored 12 points and Rachel Stankevich (So.-Goodman, Wis.) added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Maddy Doll (So.-Florence, Wis.) also finished with seven points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Lakeland shot 40.0%, hitting 26 of 65 from the field, and also outrebounded Marian 40-37. The Muskies also committed just nine turnovers.

Nicole Paulus led the Sabres with 15 points. Marian shot 16 of 51 for the game, including 5-for-25 in the first half (20.0%).
