IIT stings Muskies twice late for overtime win

CHICAGO – Illinois Institute of Technology scored late in regulation and then tallied the golden goal in the final seconds of the first overtime, sending the Lakeland University women's soccer team to a heartbreaking 3-2 loss Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match.

The Scarlet Hawks' Anita Phetchanpheng tied the match with 1:42 left in regulation and then scored the winning goal with 12 seconds left in overtime. IIT spoiled a resilient effort by the Muskies, who dropped to 2-9 overall this year.

Before IIT (4-7-1 overall) scored the equalizer late in regulation, the Muskies had led for all but 3:03 of the second half. Lakeland held a 1-0 lead at halftime after Abby Mauer (Fr.-Waldo, Wis.) scored unassisted midway through the first half, and the Muskies responded after to the Scarlet Hawks' first goal to quickly seize the lead back.

Kirsten Robinson tied the match for the hosts at 53:46, but Lakeland came right back in the 57th minute as Rachel Hasko (Fr.-Racine, Wis.) scored her second goal of the season with an assist from Alexa Piskule (Jr.-Crystal Lake, Ill.). The score stayed that way for the next 31 minutes, until Robinson fed Phetchanpheng for the tying goal.

It took a whale of an effort for the Muskies to be just a few minutes from victory, for the statistics show a match that Illinois Tech controlled play in. The Scarlet Hawks outshot Lakeland 30-8, but Karisa Rowland (Fr.-Peoria, Ariz.) made 10 saves in goal, including six in the second half.

Mauer and Makenna Waller (Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) both attempted three shots each to lead Lakeland offensively. Brianna Johnson (Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) also added one shot.

The Muskies step out of conference again on Thursday when they travel to face Maranatha Baptist University at 4 p.m. in Watertown.
