WATERTOWN, Wis. –
Meagan Simmons (
Fr.-Troy, Ill.) made her first collegiate goal a big one, tying the match late in regulation as the Lakeland University women's soccer team went on to a hard-earned 3-3 tie with Maranatha Baptist University Thursday evening in a non-conference match.
The Muskies scored two goals in the final 13 minutes of regulation to tie and then remained deadlocked through two 10-minute overtime periods. Lakeland played its second straight overtime match and finished with its first tie since 2014.
The Muskies (2-9-1 overall) were down two goals for more than 30 minutes of the second half after Maranatha Baptist's Hannah McCutcheon scored just 36 seconds into the second half for a 3-1 lead. Lakeland refused to surrender, though, and drew within a goal in the 78th minute when
Abby Mauer (
Fr.-Waldo, Wis.) scored for the third straight match, this time with an assist from
Zeni Yacab (
Fr.-Chicago, Ill.).
The Muskies weren't done, as Simmons attempted a shot in the 83rd minute that was saved, and she finally capitalized with 4:05 left in regulation. Mauer crossed a pass in front of the goal that Simmons headed in for her first goal, tying the match.
Neither team attempted a shot in the first overtime, but that changed quickly in the second extra session. Lakeland made a push early, as
Makenna Waller (
Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) missed a shot high in the 103rd minute after a pair of corner kicks and Mauer attempted a shot that was saved just over a minute later. Maranatha Baptist (2-7-1 overall) also attempted two shots in the final minutes, but neither reached the goal and the match concluded still tied.
The Muskies originally took the lead 11:02 into the match when
Rachel Hasko (
Fr.-Racine, Wis.) cleaned up a crossing pass by
Brianna Johnson (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) that was fumbled by the Sabercats goalkeeper, depositing into the net for her third goal of the season. Maranatha Baptist quickly went from a goal down to a goal ahead midway through the half, though, scoring two goals just 1:17 apart to take a 2-1 lead in the 26th minute.
The match was evenly played throughout, with the hosts finishing with a slim 14-13 advantage in shots. Lakeland goalkeeper
Karisa Rowland (
Fr.-Peoria, Ariz.) made six saves in goal, while MBU keeper Mercy Payne stopped three shots.
The Muskies finished in a tie for the first time since a 2-2 draw with Mount Mary University on Oct. 8, 2014.
Lakeland is back home on Saturday when it hosts Concordia University Chicago for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match. Game time is 1 p.m.
