Muskies lose both ends of soccer road trip to Benedictine

LISLE, Ill. – The Lakeland University men's and women's soccer teams faced a difficult road trip and both teams lost matches under the lights at Benedictine (Ill.) University on Saturday.

The Muskies women's team was defeated by the Eagles 5-1, while the Lakeland men's team lost to the hosts 3-0 in the second match of the night. Both Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matches were played in ugly conditions with rain and wind making the going challenging even as the contests were played on artificial turf.

The women's match turned late in the first half and early in the second half. Taylor Pokorny scored the first of her three goals in the 27th minute, and Benedictine (4-5-2 overall, 2-1-1 NACC) added another goal in the 38th minute for a 2-0 halftime lead.

The Eagles then added two goals in a span of 1:46 early in the second half for a 4-0 lead. Abby Mauer (Fr.-Waldo, Wis.) got Lakeland on the board midway through the half with a shot from 15 yards out over the goalie for her second goal of the season, but the Muskies (2-8 overall, 1-3 NACC) got no closer, and Benedictine added a final goal in the 83rd minute to close out the scoring.

Karisa Rowland (Fr.-Peoria, Ariz.) made 12 saves in goal for Lakeland. The Eagles finished with a 29-5 shot advantage, including 17 shots on goal.

The men's match followed a similar pattern, with the host school dominating possession with a 29-3 shots advantage. The Muskies (2-9 overall, 0-4 NACC) hung close, though, and were still within 2-0 until Benedictine added an insurance goal with 10:11 left in the match.

Nick Kapetanos scored a pair of goals for the Eagles, his 14th and 15th of the year. Thomis Mannebach (Jr.-Florence, Wis.) made seven saves in goal for Lakeland.

The Lakeland women's team is in action again Sunday when it faces Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago at 1 p.m. The Muskies men are at home Tuesday against Lawrence University at 4 p.m., the beginning of a five-game homestand.
