The Lakeland University women's volleyball team closed out the home portion of its schedule with a pair of losses in its home quadrangular Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies lost a marathon match against St. Norbert in five sets, falling 18-25, 25-21, 30-28, 20-25, 15-10. Lakeland then struggled in a 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 loss to Lawrence University in its second match.
The Muskies conclude their regular season with a 15-16 overall record and now get ready for the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament, where they open in the quarterfinals Tuesday as the fifth seed taking on fourth-seeded Edgewood College in Madison at 7 p.m. The Eagles also were on hand for Saturday's quad and defeated Lawrence in three sets and St. Norbert in four sets.
Lakeland got off to a good start against St. Norbert with a solid first set, but was inconsistent the rest of the way. The Muskies actually hit .209 for the match, their second-highest percentage in their last 11 matches, but couldn't steal the third set after rallying from five points down late and then came out slow in the deciding set after winning the fourth set to stay alive.
Brittini Scoles (
Jr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) threatened the Lakeland school record of 25 kills in a match, finishing with a career-best 21 kills while taking 53 swings.
Shannon Bishop (
Fr.-River Grove, Ill.) also added 14 kills in 29 attempts and also posted six block assists,
Allison Errthum (
Jr.-Joliet, Ill.) finished with a match-high 23 digs and
Madison Schweitzer (
Fr.-Thornton, Ill.) totaled 44 digs and four aces.
The Muskies never quite recovered from the tough five-set loss, falling behind quickly in the first set against Lawrence and never finding consistency. Lakeland hit .055 against the Vikings and had 12 service errors, many seeming to come whenever the Muskies had started to close a gap.
Erin Iwanski (
Fr.-St. Francis, Wis.) and
Emilie Schartner (
So.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) led the attack with five kills each, Errthum finished with 13 digs and three service aces and
Emma Bruder (
So.-Frankfort, Ill.) also added three aces.
Davan Fleming (
Fr.-Cremona, Alberta, Canada) started at the setter spot and notched 12 assists and
Danielle Chismarick (
Fr.-Morris, Ill.) also added nine assists.
