Lawrence University scored three times in the first half and the Lakeland University men's soccer team ran out of time in its comeback, falling by a 3-2 score Tuesday afternoon.
Renan Asato (
Sr.-Sao Paolo, Brazil) scored one goal and assisted on another as the Muskies made a furious charge in the second half after trailing by three goals at the break. Lakeland's rally came up just short, though, and the Muskies dropped to 2-10 this season.
Lawrence (4-7 overall) jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a series of quick strikes that capitalized on brief Lakeland mistakes. Taylor Reifert scored on a blast in the 17th minute and Michael Deremo took advantage of a pair of odd-man rushes to put the Vikings ahead by three late in the first half.
The Muskies were down but not out, and showed resilience in the second half by turning around momentum and dominating play over the final 45 minutes. Lakeland nearly got on the board in the 53rd minute when
Dustin Garbe (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) appeared to have an open net from 10 yards out after a ricochet, but a Lawrence defender headed his hard shot away to keep the Muskies scoreless.
Lakeland did get on the board just over four minutes later. A foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick for Asato, who converted a PK for the second time this year and his fourth goal of the season to make it 3-1.
The Muskies continued to pressure, getting off six corner kicks in a stretch of less than six minutes as players like Asato,
Tyler Norris (
Fr.-Roscoe, Ill.) and
John Bentler (
Fr.-Seattle, Wash.) continued to push near the goal. The sixth was the charm, as Asato's service got through to
Brian Herrmann (
Jr.-Hortonville, Wis.), who deflected in for a goal with still 17:25 left in the match.
Lakeland had one final rush in the final five minutes. Garbe missed a header high and Asato hit another shot that was cleared by a defender with just over two minutes to play.
Charles Apostolik (
So.-New Castle, Colo.) also missed a shot high, and the Muskies were unable to get another shot even after making a final push into the Vikings' end in the last 15 seconds.
Lawrence finished with a slim 14-12 advantage in shots in the match, though Lakeland outshot the guests 8-6 in the second half. Asato finished a very active match with five shot attempts and Garbe and Herrmann both added two shots each.
Robert Meiser made four saves in goal to get the win in his first start of the season for the Vikings.
Thomis Mannebach (
Jr.-Florence, Wis.) made seven saves in goal for the Muskies, including four in the second half.
Lakeland is home again Saturday when it welcomes Concordia University Chicago for a doubleheader. The women's match will start at 1 p.m. with the men's match at 3:30 p.m.
