MILWAUKEE –
Maddy Doll (
Jr.-Florence, Wis.) and
Bailey Grayvold (
Sr.-Norway, Mich.) both earned a place in Lakeland University women's basketball history, providing highlights in the Muskies' 72-54 loss to Wisconsin Lutheran College Tuesday night.
Doll set a new school career record for blocked shots, while Grayvold became the 11th player in the program's history to reach the 1,000-point mark for a career. The two provided the brightest spots in a game that otherwise was a struggle for Lakeland against the perennial Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference power Warriors.
Doll blocked three shots in the first half, and the third one gave her 133 for her career and the Muskies' record for career blocked shots. The 6-foot-1 center surpassed Renee Steinert, who swatted 132 shots from 2002-05.
Grayvold entered the game needing eight points to reach 1,000 points for her career, and she reached the mark on a three-pointer with 6:20 left in the third quarter. She finished the game with 11 points and now has 1,003 points in her career, and she is the first Lakeland player to notch 1,000 points since Leah Eisner in 2014.
Grayvold and Doll (10 points) were the only Muskies players to score in double figures on a night when offense was hard to come by. Lakeland (2-4 overall, 1-1 NACC) shot 30.9%, making 17 of 55 shots from the field, and only led briefly in the early minutes before WLC began to take control.
The Warriors (2-2 overall, 2-0 NACC) went on a 21-2 run in the first quarter to take a 23-7 lead, and the Muskies never got closer than 13 points again. Wisconsin Lutheran pushed the lead to 20 points early in the second quarter and it stayed around there the rest of the game, including a 44-24 halftime lead.
WLC's Jen Dowden was a load to handle all night long. The Warriors' leader piled up 18 points and nine rebounds just in the first half and finished the night with 30 points and 13 rebounds as well as three assists and two steals, making 12 of 21 shots from the field.
Wisconsin Lutheran shot 50.0% for the game, making 26 of 52 shots, including 8 of 21 from three-point range. The Warriors also out-rebounded the Muskies 38-31.
Kayla Clark (Sr.-West Bend, Wis.) added nine points for Lakeland, while Doll led the team with eight rebounds.
Tori Lauren (
Fr.-Gwinn, Mich.) also added eight points off the bench, hitting four of her five shot attempts.
The Muskies are in action in Milwaukee again Wednesday night when they face Mount Mary University for a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
