MILWAUKEE – The Lakeland University women's basketball team forced Mount Mary University into 30 turnovers and 31.6% shooting, easily overcoming its own cold shooting in a 55-38 win Wednesday night.
The Muskies completed a sweep of both of the teams' meetings this year, winning a closer game this time after registering a 42-point win less than two weeks earlier. Lakeland won the last of its five regular season non-conference games and improved to 3-4 overall this season.
The Muskies were playing in Milwaukee for the second straight night and again struggled shooting from the field. Lakeland made just 23 of its 71 field goal attempts, shooting 32.4% from the field. That included an icy night from the three-point line with just two makes in 26 tries from long range.
The Muskies still overcame the cold shooting with 25 offensive rebounds that contributed to a 47-28 rebounding advantage for the game. Along with the Blue Angels' turnovers, Lakeland finished with 33 more shot attempts than the hosts, who shot just 38 times.
Mount Mary (1-4 overall) scored the game's first four points, holding the Muskies scoreless for more than four minutes at the start. Lakeland scored the next 10 points, though, and never trailed the rest of the way.
Amanda Majewski (
Fr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) scored eight points and added four rebounds and a game-high six steals to lead the Muskies' balanced attack that included 12 different players scoring.
Bailey Grayvold (
Sr.-Norway, Mich.) and
Rachel Stankevich (
Jr.-Goodman, Wis.) also both added eight points each, with Grayvold adding seven rebounds and Stankevich pulling down five boards.
Miranda Jacobson (
So.-Felch, Mich.) also scored six points off the bench and added game highs with nine rebounds and four assists.
Rae Grubbs scored nine points to lead Mount Mary. Becky Onan also added eight points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots.
Lakeland is back home Saturday when it welcomes Aurora (Ill.) University for a 2 p.m. tip-off at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
