Bailey Grayvold (
Sr.-Norway, Mich.) scored a season-high 22 points and the Lakeland University women's basketball team used a big second quarter to defeat Aurora (Ill.) University 68-59 Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies outscored the Spartans 25-13 in the second period, including a big finish at the end of the half to take a 15-point lead into the break. Despite the best efforts of the pesky visitors, Lakeland never gave the lead back and evened its overall record at 4-4 while also improving to 2-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
Grayvold scored 13 of her 22 points in the first half, including nine in the second quarter. The Muskies slowly built the lead in the second quarter and then took command at the end of the half, when
Amanda Majewski (
Fr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) and
Miranda Jacobson (
So.-Felch, Mich.) both hit three-pointers, including Jacobson's just before the buzzer for a 37-22 halftime lead.
Lakeland extended the lead to 16 points early in the second half, but the Spartans (1-6 overall, 0-2 NACC) rallied back and got within five points late in the third quarter. Aurora continued to stay close behind Adriana Ramirez, who scored a game-high 27 points, but the Muskies had the answers and never led by less than six points in the final 10 minutes.
Jacobson scored a career-high 14 points in her first collegiate start and also added six rebounds, while
Rachel Stankevich (
Jr.-Goodman, Wis.) added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Majewski also scored eight points off the bench and
Kayla Clark (
Sr.-West Bend, Wis.) posted four steals.
Lakeland shot 40.7% from the field (22 of 54) and 18-for-27 from the foul line. The Spartans won the rebounding battle 37-27, but the Muskies scored a decisive victory in the turnover category, forcing 28 by Aurora while committing just 14 themselves.
Lakeland returns to action Wednesday when it travels to face Concordia University Wisconsin at 7 p.m. in Mequon.
