Falcons control the paint to top Muskies in game of spurts

Box Score MEQUON – Concordia University Wisconsin received a pair of double-doubles from its frontcourt and also got contributions from its bench in a 68-54 win over the Lakeland University women's basketball team Wednesday night at the R. John Buuck Fieldhouse.

The Muskies didn't have enough answers in a game filled with runs and dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Concordia used its regular formula of defense and rebounding to improve to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

The Falcons out-rebounded Lakeland 42-32 and also posted a 26-14 advantage in points off turnovers. Concordia also received 29 points from its bench, with Taylor DeLong finishing with 13 points and 12 rebounds and Baylee Barker adding 12 points including three three-pointers.

The Muskies held the upper hand for a while, taking a 16-10 lead in the second quarter when Rachel Stankevich (Jr.-Goodman, Wis.) scored inside for two of her career high-tying 20 points. Concordia soon turned the game around, though, with a 13-0 run late in the half to take a 10-point lead before Kayla Clark (Sr.-West Bend, Wis.) hit a three-pointer just before halftime to cut Lakeland's deficit to 30-23 at the break.

The Muskies got within four early in the third quarter before CUW scored nine unanswered points for a 39-26 lead. Lakeland closed back to six points late in the quarter on a three-pointer by Stankevich, but the Falcons went on another 15-2 spurt in the fourth to take their largest lead at 63-42 and essentially end hopes of a Muskies comeback.

Stankevich finished making 9 of 17 from the field and also added a team-high nine rebounds. Bailey Grayvold (Sr.-Norway, Mich.) also added 17 points, six rebounds and four assists, and the two accounted for nearly two-thirds of the Muskies' points and almost half of their rebounding total.

Lakeland shot 36.2% for the game (21 of 58), while Concordia made 28 of 62 from the floor (45.2%). Brianna Wagner also posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Muskies are back home Saturday to host Alverno College for a conference matchup at 2 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
