RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Lakeland College men's volleyball team missed a chance to close out the second set and never recovered, losing to nationally ranked Dominican (Ill.) University in three sets Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match.
The Stars-ranked eighth in the latest AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 15 Coaches Poll-completed the match sweep by a score of 25-21, 27-25, 25-18. Dominican improved to 10-2, while Lakeland dropped to 11-5.
The Muskies played for the first time in 10 days and couldn't match the Stars' hitting. Lakeland attacked at a .144 rate with 34 kills and 19 errors, while the Stars finished with 40 kills and 17 errors.
The Muskies had a real chance to take a 2-0 lead in the match, but were unable to rally late in the first set and lost a sizeable lead late in the second.
Lakeland was tied at 17-17 and was down just 21-20 late in the first set before the Stars closed it out with two kills plus one of their eight service aces. The Muskies especially will rue a missed chance in the second set, though, when they held a 23-17 lead before Dominican rallied with six straight points to tie the score and then fought off a set point before eventually winning the set.
Matt Stolz (
Jr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) led Lakeland with 13 kills and also added a team-high 10 digs.
Casey Bolda (
Jr.-Honolulu, Hawaii) also added nine kills and
Kyle Krogstad (
Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) finished with seven kills, eight digs and five blocks (one solo, four assisted).
Addison Mertler (
Fr.-Boca Raton, Fla.) also finished with 19 assists.
The Muskies are idle for almost another week again now before traveling to face North Central (Ill.) College on Friday at 7 p.m. in Naperville, Ill.
