Lakeland keeps rolling in MCVL with 3-0 sweep of Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Lakeland College men's volleyball team continued to roll through opponents in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League, defeating Fontbonne (Mo.) University in three sets Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Gymnasium.

The Muskies won by a score of 25-23, 25-19, 25-16 for their seventh straight MCVL victory and improved to 8-1 in league play and 15-5 overall. Lakeland has not lost to a league foe since a four-set defeat against Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University back on Feb. 6.

The Muskies were efficient on the attack against Fontbonne (10-7 overall, 3-6 MCVL), hitting .296 as a team with 47 kills and just 15 errors in 108 attempts. Lakeland also was consistent, hitting no worse than .278 in any of the three sets.

The Griffins gave the Muskies trouble particularly in the first two sets. The teams were tied 21-21 late in the first set before Tim Robbins (Jr.-Wheaton, Ill.) and Matt Stolz (Jr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) combined for three straight kills to put Lakeland ahead, and the Muskies weathered two Fontbonne points before finally clinching the set. The two teams were also tied at 16-16 late in the second set before the Muskies finished on a 9-3 run.

Stolz finished with 15 kills, Casey Bolda (Jr.-Honolulu, Hawaii) totaled 10 kills and Dan Matijevic (Jr.-Palatine, Ill.) added nine kills. Robbins also finished with seven kills and tied Stolz for team honors with four blocks. Michael Quiroz (Fr.-West Chicago, Ill.) started at the setter spot and racked up 38 assists, while Kyle Krogstad (Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) led the team with 11 digs.

Brendon Schwartze led Fontbonne with 11 kills while Jacob Lendy had 12 digs. The Griffins hit .158 as a team with 32 kills and 17 errors in 95 attempts.

Lakeland also recorded a three-set win Friday night on the road at Greenville (Ill.) College. No statistics are available from that match at this time.

Lakeland is in action again Monday when it travels to Fond du Lac for a triangular hosted by Marian University. The Muskies will open at 5:30 p.m. against Stevenson (Md.) University, ranked No. 8 in the latest AVCA NCAA Division III Top 15 Coaches Poll, and then will take on host Marian at 7:30.
