Muskies close in on NACC Tournament berth with emphatic sweep of Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Lakeland College softball team remained in control of its postseason destiny and closed in on a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament berth with two wins over Rockford (Ill.) University Friday.

The Muskies rocked the Regents 18-0 in five innings in the first game and then came back for a 7-2 win in the nightcap to move to the brink of advancing to the postseason for the first time since 2012. To clinch one of the final two spots in the six-team tourney, Lakeland needs one win in two games tomorrow against Milwaukee School of Engineering, or at least one loss by Wisconsin Lutheran College at league-leading Aurora (Ill.) University on Sunday.

The Muskies (19-15 overall, 11-9 NACC) hit Rockford pitching hard all day, with a combined 31 hits over two games. That included 20 hits in the opener, when the team scored 17 of its 18 runs over three innings.

Lakeland tagged the Regents (4-34 overall, 0-20 NACC) for four runs in the first inning, seven in the second and then six more in the fourth in racing out to a 17-0 lead. The Muskies did their damage in methodical fashion, with 17 of the 20 hits registering as singles.

Jocelyn Yeager (Fr.-Stoughton, Wis.) went 4-for-4 with three runs batted in and three runs scored, Rosa Gonzalez (So.-Elwood, Ill.) went 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored and four RBIs, and Calie Delisi (So.-Oak Forest, Ill.) and Sami Jo Williams (Jr.-Sussex, Wis.) both added three hits each. Caten Teff (Jr.-Alpena, Mich.) also added two hits and three RBIs, and in all nine players finished with hits and 10 different players scored runs.

Taylor Bush (Fr.-Waukesha, Wis.) was the beneficiary and pitched effectively, throwing a complete game shutout allowing just three hits with two strikeouts for her ninth win of the season.

Lakeland continued its steady pace in the second game, with runs scored in each of the first five innings and 10 of its 11 hits marked as singles. Gonzalez had a pair of hits and scored twice, Angela Tribuzio (So.-Huntley, Ill.) drove in two runs and A.J. Zickuhr (Fr.-Bettendorf, Iowa) got her first two collegiate hits and went 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the third inning and a run scored.

Savannah Stenlund (So.-Rapid River, Mich.) went all the way in the circle in the second game and allowed five hits and two runs while striking out eight, improving to 8-6 this season.

The Muskies will play their regular season and home finale tomorrow against MSOE starting at noon. It also will be Senior Day for former player and current team manager Jasmine Suarez, the only senior on this year's team.
