Halftime lead slips away as Beavers rally past Muskies

MILWAUKEE – Blackburn (Ill.) College scored four times in the second half and the Lakeland University women's soccer team dropped a 5-2 decision Saturday afternoon in its first match in the Inferno Cup hosted by Alverno College.

The Muskies led 2-1 at the half, but the Beavers started the final 45 minutes quickly, made the most of their second-half opportunities and also received some help to pull away. Blackburn won for the first time this year and improved to 1-3-1, while Lakeland dropped to 1-2 this season.

The Muskies got on the board first when Rachel Hasko (Fr.-Racine, Wis.) scored her first collegiate goal just 6:39 into the match. Brianna Johnson (Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) assisted on the first goal and then scored one herself later, an unassisted tally with just over four minutes remaining in the first half for a 2-1 lead.

Blackburn tied the match just 22 seconds into the second half on a goal by Makayla Ewing, and the Beavers took the lead in the 58th minute on an unassisted goal by Christin Miller, her second of the match. Lakeland then helped Blackburn get some breathing room with an own goal at 62:36 to make it a two-goal game.

The Beavers added a final insurance goal with 7:25 left in the match, as Maya March scored with an assist from Skylar Burgar.

Blackburn outshot Lakeland 17-13, but the Muskies held a 5-4 advantage in the second half. Hasko fired seven shots-three on goal-and Makenna Waller (Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) added two shot attempts.

Karisa Rowland (Fr.-Peoria, Ariz.) and Mikenzie Howarth (Fr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) combined to make seven saves in goal for Lakeland.

The Muskies are in action in the Inferno Cup again Sunday when they face Knox (Ill.) College at 11 a.m.
