Ryan Berkley scored less than eight minutes into the match and Lawrence University weathered injuries to defeat the Lakeland University women's soccer team 1-0 Saturday afternoon on the Muskies' home pitch.
Lawrence played the entire second half two players down, but the Muskies were unable to take advantage and dropped to 1-4 this season. The Vikings also are now 1-4 on the year and improved to 9-0 all-time against Lakeland.
Berkley scored her team's first goal of the season and the only goal of the match at 7:35, receiving a pass ahead from Mari Hubanks and firing from the left side 25 yards out. Her shot found back right corner of the net to give the guests a lead they would not relinquish.
The Vikings suffered a pair of injuries, as forward Leanne King left late in the first half and midfielder Madeline Kiehl left the game at halftime with an injury. Playing 11-on-9, though, the Muskies were unable to capitalize, holding possession in the midfield but only able to put one shot on goal in the final 45 minutes by
Brianne Frank (
Sr.-Plain, Wis.) in the 65th minute.
Rachel Hasko (
Fr.-Racine, Wis.) led Lakeland offensively with six shot attempts, including several near misses high or wide in both halves.
Brianna Johnson (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) added three shots.
Karisa Rowland (
Fr.-Peoria, Ariz.) started in goal and played the first 64 minutes, allowing one goal and making three saves before giving way to
Mikenzie Howarth (
Fr.-Peshtigo, Wis.), who made one save. Kori Looker made three saves to get the shutout for Lawrence.
The Muskies are back in action Friday when they travel to face Alverno College at 4 p.m. in Milwaukee in their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener.
