MILWAUKEE – Alverno College scored twice late in the first half to take control and went on to defeat the Lakeland University women's soccer team 6-0 Friday night in both teams' Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference openers.

The Muskies lost on Alverno's home field for the third time in seven days after also losing twice in the hosts' Inferno Cup invitational last weekend. Lakeland also was held without a goal for the third straight match and dropped to 1-5 overall.

Alverno's Jackie Vandervolk scored three goals and added an assist. Three others scored goals for the Inferno, who improved to 4-1 this year and defeated the Muskies for the third time in 15 all-time meetings.

The Muskies were not dominated on the field, as Alverno held a 12-6 shot advantage. Stephanie Figueroa (So.-Round Lake Park, Ill.) put two shots on goal and Rachel Hasko (Fr.-Racine, Wis.) also added two shots (one on goal).

Mikenzie Howarth (Fr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) played in goal and made three saves for Lakeland. Allison Weick stopped four shots to earn the shutout for Alverno.

The Muskies return to Milwaukee once again on Sunday when they travel to face Mount Mary University at 1 p.m.
