Blue Angels break through in second half to stop Muskies

MILWAUKEE – Mount Mary University scored two goals just over six minutes apart in the second half to defeat the Lakeland University women's soccer team 2-0 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match.

Kaeli Stellings scored at 55:37 of the match to break a scoreless tie and Allison Klotz scored 6:04 later, and the Blue Angels held the Muskies the rest of the way. Mount Mary defeated Lakeland for the first time since 1997, a span of 13 matches.

The Muskies (1-6 overall) had their best chances in the first half, putting five shots on goal. Lakeland was unable to capitalize, though, and was shut out for the fourth consecutive match.

Stephanie Figueroa (So.-Round Lake Park, Ill.) had three shots on goal in the first half in an early flurry, and in all seven Muskies took at least one shot. The two teams tied with 11 shot attempts each, and Lakeland held a slim 6-5 lead in shots on goal.

The Muskies had even more opportunities, posting a huge 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. That included four in the last seven minutes, but Lakeland could only one shot through them, an attempt by Karen Hjelle (Sr.-Malone, Wis.) with 2:38 left that went wide left.

Hannah Rose made six saves to earn the shutout for Mount Mary (3-4 overall). Mikenzie Howarth (Fr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) made three saves in going the distance for the Muskies.

Lakeland next will be back home to face Dominican (Ill.) University on Saturday at 1 p.m. in another Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.
