EAU CLAIRE – The Lakeland University women's volleyball team put in plenty of work-nine sets worth-but came out with a 1-1 record in its first two matches at the Nike/Eastbay Tournament hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Friday.
The Muskies faced nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point for the second time in nine days and lost to the Pointers in four sets in the opener. Lakeland then came right back for a hard-fought five-set win over Concordia College Moorhead (Minn.) in the nightcap to improve to 6-3 this season.
The Muskies were swept by UWSP in their first meeting, but this time claimed the first set against the now 10th-ranked Pointers. Lakeland also pushed Point to the limit in the third set but eventually surrendered 21-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-10.
Lakeland defeated Concordia in the second match by a 27-25, 16-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-11 score. The Muskies' defense up front made a difference, as nine blocks were 7.5 more than the Cobbers (3-5 overall) mustered.
Shannon Bishop (
Fr.-River Grove, Ill.) led the attack with 24 kills over the two matches, including 14 against Concordia.
Allison Errthum (
Jr.-Joliet, Ill.) also added 15 kills in the nightcap, while
Emma Bruder (
