EAU CLAIRE – The Lakeland University women's volleyball team came up against some quality opponents from the state of Minnesota and dropped its final two matches at the Nike/Eastbay Tournament hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The Muskies lost to the University of St. Thomas 25-19, 25-12, 25-20, and then were defeated by Gustavus Adolphus College 25-17, 25-19, 25-21. Lakeland concluded the two-day tourney with a 1-3 record and is now 6-5 overall on the season with Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play now just around the corner.
The Muskies were unable to answer a St. Thomas attack that hit .280 in the first match with 41 kills and just 11 errors. Lakeland hit .093 as a team, and the Tommies finished with 11 team blocks.
Brittini Scoles (
Jr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) led the Muskies with seven kills,
Emma Bruder (
So.-Frankfort, Ill.) notched 13 digs and
Brianna Johnson (
So.-Altoona, Wis.) added 12 digs.
Madison Schweitzer (
Fr.-Thornton, Ill.) finished with 24 assists.
Lakeland also lost in three sets to a Gustavus Adolphus team that sits just outside the AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll. Scoles finished with six kills, Johnson totaled eight digs and
Kathy Flanagan (
Sr.-Midlothian, Ill.) added three solo blocks.
Bruder also was selected as a member of the nine-player all-tournament team. The sophomore defensive specialist finished with 54 digs over four matches and received all-tourney honors at the collegiate level for the first time.
The Muskies now prepare for the NACC opener Wednesday against Wisconsin Lutheran College. It also will be the team's home opener, with match time set for 7 p.m. in the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
