Nwachan (Ayoko) Nda (
Sr.-Douala Litoral Region, Cameroon) and
Charles Apostolik (
So.-New Castle, Colo.) scored early goals and the Lakeland University men's soccer team held firm the rest of the way in a 2-0 win over Maranatha Baptist University Tuesday afternoon.
Thomis Mannebach (
Jr.-Florence, Wis.) made six saves for his second shutout of the season and the Muskies won for the second time in three matches. Lakeland also won its second straight non-conference match and improved to 2-6 this season.
The Muskies dominated the first half and held a significant shot advantage for the entire match, outshooting the Sabercats (1-4 overall) 26-9. A slim 9-7 advantage in shots on goal didn't indicate the extent to which the hosts held a subtle but strong upper hand in the match.
Lakeland needed just over eight minutes to get on the board, as
John Bentler (
Fr.-Seattle, Wash.) played the ball ahead to Nda, who scored at 8:12 for his fourth goal of the season. Bentler also was involved in the second goal, as
Renan Asato (
Sr.-Sao Paolo, Brazil) fed a pass from the center of the field to Bentler on the right wing, who quickly moved it ahead to Apostolik. The sophomore forward was then one-on-one with the goalkeeper and needed just two touches before punching a shot past Andrew Taylor to make it 2-0 in the 20th minute.
The Muskies had further chances, the best coming early in the second half when
Dustin Garbe (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) ran onto a shot on the left and his blast beat the keeper but hit the left post.
Much of the second half was a midfield back-and-forth, and Maranatha had few quality chances. Their best came in the 84th minute off a corner kick, but Brett Cournoyer's shot right off the kick was swept away by
Josh Mann (
Jr.-Washington Island, Wis.) to preserve the shutout.
Asato and
Bonny Figueroa (
Fr.-El Cajon, Calif.) both attempted six shots each, Apostolik added three and in all nine of the 13 to play in the field attempted at least one shot.
Mannebach made six saves, including five in the first half, and not including penalty kicks has now allowed just one goal in field play in the last three matches. Taylor made seven saves in goal for Maranatha Baptist.
Lakeland is home again on Saturday when it welcomes Dominican (Ill.) University at 3:30 p.m. as the second match of a doubleheader between the two schools. The women's teams will square off first at 1 p.m.
