FOND DU LAC – Marian University put the Lakeland University women's volleyball team in a big hole it could never dig out of and surprised the Muskies in four sets Tuesday night in their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.

The Sabres got off to a hot start and rode it to a 25-15, 25-21, 16-25, 25-21 win. Lakeland was pinned with a conference loss to a team it swept easily in three sets in its season opener and is now 8-9 overall and 1-1 in the NACC.

The Muskies were plagued by errors, specifically on the serve. Lakeland committed 14 service errors, and in a match where both teams hit at almost the exact same rate (.104 for the Muskies, .102 for the Sabres), that proved to be a difference.

The Muskies hit better than .105 in just one set, warming up to a .259 rate in winning the third set. Lakeland slipped again in the fourth set, though, and the Sabres hit .167 in that set to complete the win, hanging on after the Muskies rallied from a 19-12 deficit in the fourth set to get within one at 21-20.

Brittini Scoles (Jr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) led the Muskies with 11 kills, Taylor Levitt (Sr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) paced the team with 14 digs and Brianna Johnson (So.-Altoona, Wis.) added 10 digs and four service aces. Madison Schweitzer (Thornton, Ill.) also finished with 33 assists.

Caitlyn Brehm led Marian (4-12 overall, 2-1 NACC) with nine kills and also paced the team with 13 digs, one of four players in double figures in digs. Jenna Skroski added 12 digs and five aces.

Lakeland is in action again next on Homecoming when it welcomes Alverno College for a 6 p.m. first serve on Saturday at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
