WLC rallies from early deficit to top Muskies men’s soccer team

MILWAUKEE – The Lakeland University men's soccer team scored first but Wisconsin Lutheran College answered with the final three goals to defeat the Muskies 3-1 Wednesday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.

Renan Asato (Sr.-Sao Paolo, Brazil) scored in the early going but the Warriors rallied to keep Lakeland winless in conference play (2-8 overall). WLC improved to 6-3-2 overall and is now 3-1 in the NACC.

Asato's goal came just 6:29 into the match off an assist by Bonny Figueroa (Fr.-El Cajon, Calif.). His third goal of the season gave the Muskies a lead for a while, but Wisconsin Lutheran tied it in the 28th minute on a goal by Nick Zupinski and then took the lead at 34:46 when Enrique Arreaola knocked in a corner kick for a 2-1 lead.

The Warriors added a third goal early in the second half as Isaiah Gronholz scored unassisted. The score would stay at 3-1 the rest of the way, with Asato, John Bentler (Fr.-Seattle, Wash.) and Brian Herrmann (Jr.-Hortonville, Wis.) putting Lakeland's only shots on goal the rest of the way.

Wisconsin Lutheran outshot the Muskies 24-9 for the match, including 12 shots in both halves. Thomis Mannebach (Jr.-Florence, Wis.) and Josh Mann (Jr.-Washington Island, Wis.) combined to play in goal for Lakeland, with Mannebach making four saves and Mann adding one in a brief 12-minute stint in the second half.

Erek Lehnen made four saves in goal for WLC. Juan Serna attempted seven shots to lead the Warriors offense.

The Muskies are back in action Saturday when they travel to face Benedictine (Ill.) University at 7:30 p.m.
