Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Apostolik scores twice but Ripon rallies to top Lakeland

Nick Thillman scored the go-ahead goal in the 68th minute and Ripon College rallied from an early two-goal deficit to defeat the Lakeland University men's soccer team 3-2 Thursday afternoon.

Thillman cleaned up a corner kick for his first goal of the season and the Red Hawks' first lead of the match. Ripon defeated the Muskies for the first time since 2010, while Lakeland dropped its fourth straight game to start the season.

The Muskies got off to a good start with two early goals from Charles Apostolik (New Castle, Colo.), both coming in the first 11 minutes. The sophomore forward scored his first goal just 2 1/2 minutes into the match after a nice pass from Dustin Garbe (Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.). Brian Herrmann (Jr.-Hortonville, Wis.) also received an assist on the play.

Apostolik scored again at 10:57 of the match, receiving a nice centering pass from John Bentler (Fr.-Seattle, Wash.) and finding the right side of the net for his team-leading third goal of the year.

Ripon (2-2 overall) got one goal back in the first half. Cameron Greene hit a crossing pass from the left that Paul Karls touched and got to roll just past the end line past Muskies goalkeeper Bradley Stoeckel (Fr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.).

The Red Hawks then tied it and took the lead with a pair of goals 6:44 apart. Cameron Greene scored the first, receiving a long throw-in from Zach Carlson and scoring on a blast from the right side of the box that nicked the crossbar and found the upper right corner in the 62nd minute.

The goal that proved to be the game-winner came off a corner kick by Karls that was originally attacked by Carlson, who deflected the pass left to Thillman, who poked the ball in the net for his first goal of the season with 22:13 left in the match.

Lakeland attempted a final push late but had just two shots in the final 20 minutes. Renan Asato (Sr.-Sao Paolo, Brazil) hit a shot wide in the 76th minute, and the best chance from three corner kicks in the final 3:12 came from  Garrett Jahnke (Jr.-Howards Grove, Wis.), who attempted to turn and shoot after a corner with just over two minutes left but his shot was blocked.

Ripon finished with a slight 13-11 advantage in shots, and both teams finished with seven shots on goal. Stoeckel made four saves for the Muskies, while Jimmy Amedeo and Brady Stockwell combined to make five saves for the Red Hawks, with Stockwell playing the final 28 minutes and getting credited with the win.

Lakeland goes on the road Saturday to face Augustana (Ill.) University, with a match scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Rock Island, Ill.
