Kayla Clark (
Sr.-West Bend, Wis.) hit a tiebreaking three-pointer with 11 seconds left and the Lakeland University women's basketball team hit its free throws in the final seconds to finish off a 61-57 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering Wednesday night.
The Muskies fought back in the fourth quarter after chasing the Raiders for more than three quarters and won their fifth straight game. Lakeland improved to 9-5 overall and kept pace among the leaders in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game, improving to 7-2 in league play.
Clark's three-pointer from the right wing for her first field goal of the game snapped a 54-54 tie and came after MSOE (7-6 overall, 4-4 NACC) had just scored six straight points to tie the game.
Bailey Grayvold (
Sr.-Norway, Mich.) and
Miranda Jacobson (
So.-Felch, Mich.) then both hit two free throws each in the final six seconds to secure the win.
The Muskies only were in position to win down the stretch thanks to a 10-2 run in the fourth quarter that gave the home team control for the first time in the game. Lakeland took its first lead of the game on a steal and layup by
Rachel Stankevich (
Jr.-Goodman, Wis.) that made it 47-46 with 5:11 left, and Grayvold's layup with 2:53 left gave the Muskies a 54-48 lead.
MSOE was not done yet, though. Jamie Spanbauer and Holly Denfeld scored inside to cut Lakeland's lead to two, and Margaret Pugh converted a layup with 22 seconds left to tie the score at 54-54, setting the stage for Clark's heroics.
Before the late stages, the Muskies were on a seemingly endless chase to track down the Raiders, who scored the game's first 11 points and led by 12 points in the first quarter. By the second quarter Lakeland had worked back to a 17-17 tie, and the Muskies tied the score on eight different occasions, but every time MSOE would slip away until the late spurt in the fourth quarter.
Stankevich finished with 15 points plus team highs of 11 rebounds, six steals and two blocks. Grayvold also scored 15 points and Jacobson added 13 points and five rebounds.
Lakeland shot 41.1% (23 of 56) and was out-rebounded 35-31 and was also at a slight disadvantage to MSOE at the end in free throws and three-pointers made. The Muskies made up for those differences, though, by taking advantage of 20 Raiders' turnovers.
Spanbauer scored a game-high 22 points for MSOE, hitting 5 of 9 from three-point range. Denfeld-the reigning NACC player of the year-added 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Lakeland now begins a string of three consecutive road games beginning with a trip to face Rockford (Ill.) University Saturday at 2 p.m.
